Thinking of grandmas passing brings sadness to me as it does everyone that is here, yet there are ways that we can always remember her. They say that the sense of smell is one of strongest senses that can make our memory recall something or in this case, someone. I can still remember the way grandpa Hathaway’s shop smelled like a mixture of oil, metal, and grain dust. For grandma, the smells that come to mind most often when thinking of her are, water, stuffing and money. Some people might think water? Water doesn’t have a smell, I know that water doesn’t really have a smell but you never had a bath on their farm with well water! The smell of the well water there was rather different than the water we got in the city. Grandma’s bathtub was always a thing of wonder, always fully stocked with water toys for her grandchildren. It was great to stay overnight there and look forward to a bath where we could play and play, just with that odd water smell that always had me puzzled. I told my mom that for me it was somehow poignant that grandma should pass on thanksgiving day, because I can still remember the smell of turkey dinner at her house on the farm and the wonderful stuffing that I fell in love with. No offence Mom but your turkey stuffing was nothing like the stuffing grandma used to make on those special occasions. I could not care less about the rest of the food, a turkey, potatoes or homemade pumpkin pie, grandma had better have made extra stuffing for me! The smell of the turkey cooking only made me think of what was waiting inside the bird for me. Now to the smell money. I don’t associate the smell of money with grandma because she was always generous to all her family or because of a some feeling of richness that could be associated with her life filled with friends and family spread all over the world but because of my first visit to their house in Lloydminister. This was back when grandpa was still with us and their house on the aptly named Alberta crescent . We arrived and settled into the house, the family spread out from sewing room to cots in the basement for the nights sleep. In the morning I woke up and had breakfast before getting ready later in the day to head to to co-op for lunch, I put my shoes on and went outside, the wind had shifted and the smell from the rape seed plant hit me like a quick punch in the nose, this smell I would be quickly told by mom, grandpa and grandma was the smell of money.

To All:
Needless to say I am very sorry to have lost another member of our extended family. I enjoyed visiting Louise every summer when I came to Lloydminster to visit the old Hathaway homestead first settled in 1903. For medical reasons I could not make it this year.
As time separates us from this event we will all realize more and more what a good person she was. From this we can draw strength to carry on. May God be good to all of you.

To Betty Ann, Marilyn & Sheri & Families - Your mother was an amazing person - she taught me in grade 8 and I got to know her a lot better when I worked with her on the History Book in Marwayne. She had a great sense of humor, was a very caring person and has touched many lives during her time here on earth. I remember going through her scrapbooks that she kept of all the students that she taught and was amazed that a teacher would care that much about so many children and would keep up with what they had accomplished in life. My sympathies are with you all in this time of sadness. Penney Ford

Betty-Ann, Marilyn & Sheri:
Our sincere sympathies in the loss of your Mom, my Mom's (Elisabeth Miller, nee Chisholm) dearest friend since they were very young children. I well remember the jokes, laughter and singing when your parents visited or we were lucky enough to visit your farm. Too bad we hadn't recorded their version of some of the old war songs and hymns, especially my favorite, "Amazing Grace". I still enjoy Mom's scrapbook of the four of them on their trip to England and Scotland.
I will miss your Mom very much when my Mom comes to visit because we always included a trip to Lloyd.

Though I have a few memories of meeting Louise and Harold many years ago when they visited my parents in Lethbridge, my fondest memories are those from 2003, when I was able to reconnect with the Hathaway side of the family during the Lloydminster Centennial. You were all so welcoming to myself and my father, Laurence, and I still remember a fun day traipsing through the grass on the old homestead plot and settling down to a wonderful dinner afterwards.
Louise made sure we stayed in touch since then, exchanging letters. I appreciated her grace and kindness, and admired her independent spirit. My heart goes out to all of the children and grandchildren at this time.

Betty Anne, Marilyn, Sheri and families,
We are sorry to hear of your mother's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Your mother leaves behind many memories. I am one of the many students that she taught at Marwayne Jubilee. I appreciate the interest that she took in each of her students, her discipline and the sense of wit she portrayed. May you find comfort and strenght for the days ahead in the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.
With sympathy,
Luverne Baron

Dear Betty Anne, Marilyn, and Sheri and families,
It seems funny that I, at age 61, still think of your mother as "Mrs. Hathaway" but your mother has always remained in high regard for me. She was one of my teachers at the Marwayne school. I can still see her writing across the blackboard in her lovely fine handwriting - not something all teachers have. Her love of the English language, spoken and written correctly, has certainly made an impact on many of her students including me. Her smile of encouragement, and her graciousness are things that stayed with her all her life. I suppose it must be somewhat difficult to be a child of a schoolteacher, and you will have different memories of her teaching , but I hope you might find it comforting to know the positive impact she had for me. I am glad I had the experience of having her as one of my teachers so many years ago. Always as we met through later years she was interested in following what was happening in my career and continued to give encouragement - she was truly engaged in her life. I was so pleased to be able to attend the service at the graveside at Marwayne, thank you for allowing this to happen. Pat (Wheat) Carey
